Catering for those suffering with Eating Disorders
By Jim Hyndman – PROMIS Head Chef
“Since joining PROMIS almost two years ago I have learnt an incredible amount about eating disorders and those suffering from them. I came to PROMIS with considerable experience of preparing and cooking high quality food for restaurants but with little knowledge of catering for people suffering with eating disorders, I have learnt quickly to a point where both myself and my team are able to deal with even the most difficult cases and can provide useful information, advice and practical help as well as high quality, nutritious meals for all of our patients and visitors.
I feel that it is important to treat each person as an individual, as though they were a member of your own family and help them as much as possible. We learn what works and what doesnt work for each individual, always sticking to the PROMIS Eating Disorder Guidelines. Above all we aim to make their new food plan straight forward and manageable in order for them to carry on with it when they leave PROMIS.
The tools we use to do this consist of the wealth of experience from the staff at PROMIS, sound nutrition and a strong desire to help people improve their interest, knowledge and understanding of enjoying food in a normal and healthy manner. To encourage this we provide cooking classes, recipe handouts and one to one sessions.
Finally, I would like to add that sharing knowledge works best when it flows in both directions, we are always looking for new ideas and information that strengthens our expertise in dealing with eating disorders and would welcome any suggestions that you may have in order to continuing helping people suffering with eating disorders.”
Immediate Admission
Immediate admission is possible and often necessary as our patients, and their families, can find themselves in crisis situations.
