How often have you been told “there’s nothing you can do to help until they ask for help themselves”? This page is for those people who are not prepared to accept this.
Intervention is the skill of helping people accept help who otherwise might be left to do themselves and others untold damage.
An intervention involves getting family and friends to show a united front of care and concern to the addict. There is a common misconception that this involves an angry confrontation. Although emotions clearly run high in such an important meeting, our experience is that there is much more love and concern expressed than anger and it is the love and concern that are the effective ingredients here.
With every other mental health problem there is an understanding that families often need to step in and direct a sufferer towards appropriate help. Addictive illness is exactly the same. A crisis can occur at any time, and an intervention aims at disrupting the downward spiral of chaos and crisis within families caused by addiction. Led by a professional PROMIS counsellor, our solution provides a specific goal with immediate help and relief to the individual.
To do an effective intervention requires some preparation on the part of the family. This can take some weeks or can be done in an emergency very quickly. Either way you can contact PROMIS 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – we will always be on hand to take your call, and provide you the support and help you need, when you need it, in these most delicate of times.
